Joseph “Joey” E. Burtner joined James Bates Brannan Groover LLP in the winter of 2022. His practice focuses on both commercial and civil litigation matters such as contract, municipal government, and insurance defense.

Joey is originally from Macon, Georgia, and is grateful to move back after law school. He earned his B.A. in Accounting from Mercer University, graduating in 2006. After completing his undergraduate work, Joey spent his 20’s as an entrepreneur in Macon’s bar and restaurant scene downtown.

Desiring a change of pace, Joey left Macon to pursue a graduate degree from Wake Forest University and spending the next few years in the field of corporate sustainability, primarily focusing on monetizing waste streams. This field often encountered legal issues, which pushed Joey to switch careers again to become an attorney.

Joey viewed this as an opportunity to come back to Georgia and attended University of Georgia School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor in 2022.

Prior to joining James Bates Brannan Groover LLP, Joey gained experience in a wide variety of legal matters. During Law School, he clerked for Chief Judge Howard Sims; Chambliss, Higdon, Richardson, Katz & Griggs LLP; earned a certificate in mediation; and assisted the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge apply for status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After Hours

Joey currently resides in Macon, Georgia. He enjoys travel, photography, building furniture in his workshop and spending time on Lake Tobesofkee.
