Shepard Smith primarily practices insurance defense law and general civil litigation and counsels clients on a variety of business issues, tort litigation and local government law matters in Georgia and nationwide.

Shepard works to devise practical resolutions that mitigate risk and solve his clients’ problems in a timely and efficient manner. Always straightforward and candid, he gives his clients realistic assessments of their cases. He enjoys dealing with questions of law, applying the facts to them, analyzing the issue thoroughly, and providing a “long look down the road,” as he says, so those he represents know where they are headed and what to expect along the way.

Prior to joining the firm, Shepard practiced law in North Carolina, where he represented municipal governments and corporate clients in insurance defense, workers’ compensation defense and many other general litigation matters. In that capacity he occasionally advocated on the plaintiffs’ side—experiences that gave him a broad legal perspective and helpful insights that he currently draws on to evaluate cases effectively and craft smart defense strategies.

Shepard gets to know his clients and their organizations very well so he can optimally tailor his representation and advocacy to their specific goals, concerns and priorities. Maintaining a congenial and professional manner in his practice, he is firm but fair in litigation. He wants his clients to know he cares deeply about relieving their legal burdens so they can return their attention to running their businesses.

After Hours

Spending time with his wife and two daughters is most important to him. Shepard is a college football enthusiast who lives in the Athens area, so he tries to attend as many UGA games as possible. He also loves to cook and travel.
